An early fascination with the imagery of alchemy led me to the Hermetic wisdom tradition. The elements of earth, air, fire, and water are essential in Hermeticism, so I began experimenting with elemental processes in my art. I discovered that the delicate patterns left by smoke could be scratched and rubbed away to make marks. This technique is called “fumage.

The ethereal beauty of fumage suited the series of classical Greek goddesses that followed. In time I found myself entranced by the image of Isis, and came to adore her. Much of my work since is devoted to the goddess.

I illustrated the Drain Dragon for my friend and boss, Dan Morgan, of Carmel Middle School near Monterey CA, where I have the great good fortune to teach art. He wrote the wildly imaginative story for his three boys.
